Oorjaa creates sustainable lights and furniture using waste materials, handcrafted with individuality and simplicity in mind. By minimizing waste in both design and production, we create products that are easy on the eye and the environment.
Lantana camara is a toxic and invasive weed that was introduced into India as an ornamental plant in the early 1800s and has now taken over more than 300,000 sq kms or about 40 percent of India’s wild areas. Lantana is changing the country’s forest landscape, restricting wildlife movement, inhibiting the growth of local species and contributing to enormous biodiversity loss and zoonotic diseases.

The Gaia Pillars of Light is a sustainable light sculpture made from natural materials like banana fibre paper and lantana, which are biodegradable and renewable. The use of these materials reduces the environmental impact of production and waste, while also allowing for endless design possibilities. By mimicking nature, Oorjaa can create functional pieces that emphasize the interconnectedness of all things in nature.

“Be still and mindful”
Said the wise old tree.
“life may seem long;
But time will flee”
Like mushrooms that grow on dead

mushroom lights redeem lantana, once
a weed, now a beautiful sculpture.

Summer Rain is a lantana light sculpture that captures the essence of a captivating summer downpour. The intricate design of the sculpture features cascading led lights emerging from a curved Lantana cloud, that creates the illusion of raindrops falling from above. The soft glow of the light shining through the lantana adds to the ethereal beauty of the sculpture, making it a perfect addition to any indoor or outdoor space. Summer Rain is not only a stunning work of art but also a prime example of sustainable design,

The majestic and graceful Asian elephant is one of the species most affected by Lantana. Designed by the Real Elephant Collective and handcrafted by members of several indigenous communities of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, in South India, who have been co-existing with elephants and other wild animals. These tribal communities supplement their livelihood by removing lantana from the jungle.

The process of creating sustainable materials for design is a delicate one, and Oorjaa has perfected it with their use of banana fiber rope and waste banana fiber paper. The panels are handwoven on a loom, showcasing the intricate and precise work of the artisans who make them. The use of banana fiber rope adds a unique texture and durability to the panels, making them ideal for use in various design applications. The waste banana fiber paper used in the panels is a byproduct of Oorjaa's paper-making and lamp production processes, making it an eco-friendly material choice.
